Every story about the devil names the figure as the prince of lies. A beautiful angel, who once cast out then metamorphoses into a grotesque monster. I think that breakups are a little like this. Who doesn’t think of their ex as the devil in their lives?
Starcrawler’s single “She Gets Around” as well as the accompanying video narrates this thought perfectly.
“Keep pulling me down… keep begging for more but I won’t feed you…” For all of Starcrawler’s flash and flare, it’s really their brilliant songwriting that sets them apart from other young rock and roll revivalists. There’s only so much one can do with thrashing instrumentals and the ability to scream yourself hoarse. Starcrawler has both of these skills under their skinny belts, but above all, they have the ability to simplify thoughts in their music in a fashion that would make Ernest Hemingway blush.
There isn’t much to the video itself. A black and white stage set with frontwoman Arrow De Wilde hanging from the rafters decked out in white angel wings. In another shot she drowns beneath flowing black sheets, clawing at her own face. A more complicated video would have taken away from the poignancy of the song itself, which beneath its danceable drum beat, is actually a pretty brutal breakup song.
In an age where Ariana Grande walks on ceilings in flowing silk gowns and Taylor Swift flies through the air Marry Poppins-like with a candy-colored umbrella, watching a band just film themselves playing music is pretty groundbreaking in itself.
Besides, if anyone has ever seen Starcrawler play live, there is no way they could ever do justice to their real-life manic energy behind a monitor. You need to feel the blood spray in real time. I’m not exaggerating.
