As labor day passes, signifying the death of summer Fridays, it’s time we all reflect on these past few months. This year’s summer solstice happened to mark the birth of Schlagenheim — Black Midi’s debut album. If you live under a rock and haven’t heard of the London quartet, they’re basically the next best thing since sliced bread. The group consists of frontman Geordie Greep, drummer Morgan Simpson, bassist Cameron Picton and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin. Black Midi’s sound is far more expansive than their lifespan, as the lot are barely in their twenties. I had the opportunity to document the press-shy band’s latest show in New York at Bowery Ballroom back in July.
And finally, to compensate from the lack of drum action from my view of the stage, a portrait of the otherworldly Morgan Simpson.
Be sure to catch Black Midi when they return to NYC at Warsaw on November 11th
Much like the sounds of Schlagenheim, my summer was filled with twists, turns and abrupt changes of pace. While spending 12 days in Europe, I visited Amsterdam and even journeyed to Black Midi’s own soil. Check out the gallery below for more.
