Fresh off of their amazing performance at SXSW, Against Me! hits us with a lyric music video for “Black Me Out” off their most recent album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues. The black and white video garners a fluidity created by lyrics printed on transitioning paper-cut-outs. The cut-out images are representations of the themes within in this alt rock anthem such as suicide, guilt and insecurity. The tracks off of this groundbreaking album reflect the insecurities and displacement lead singer Laura Jane Grace felt her entire life while dealing with Transgender Dysphoria.
In 2012, she came out as a transgender woman, changed her name to Laura Jane Grace and started producing the band’s critically acclaimed, Transgender Dysphoria Blues based off her experiences. Throughout the gritty video we never see the band members’ faces, although there are scenes when we are watching them perform, and are only left with dark heckling cut-out people; which explains the title. This video takes you back to your high school headbanging Sum 41 phase — and it never felt so good.
