Watch: Death Grips “On GP”

Ceasing their guerilla attack of an existence with a string of cancelled tour dates and a cryptic open letter dubbing the band “a conceptual art exhibition anchored by sound and vision,” Death Grips has carefully crafted a reputation to precede itself, but one that also eclipses the band completely. Now the notorious experimental hip-hop group have crushed through months of radio silence with a video for “On GP,” a track off the final installment of their double (and supposedly final) album The Powers That B, entitled Jenny Death. Initially released with unnerving footage of the band silently festering in an echo chamber, the marrow-grinding track is now paired with footage of a magician tooling through town with plenty of tricks in his back pocket.

“On GP” thankfully thrusts the spotlight away from public antagonism and back to Zach Hill and Stefan Burnett’s gut-churning thrash hop. Crackling with percussion blasts and distortion-smothered guitar, Burnett delivers some of the most evocative lyrics of the duo’s catalog. “My most recent purchase old black rope / gonna learn how to tie it hang it in my chamber” barrels through the musical maelstrom with squeamish clarity.

The Powers That B will be out March 31 via Harvest/Third Worlds Records.
