Watch: Solange “Lovers in the Parking Lot”

Solange, of the songstress-laden Knowles family, has released a video for the song “Lovers in the Parking Lot” off her 2012 EP, True. The video, shot in a shopping mall at closing time, strikes just the right tone for the youthfully wistful, yet danceable track.

Directed by the singer, Peter J. Brant, and Emily Kai Bock, the video was produced by the Creators Project, a collaboration between Intel and Vice that celebrates the intersection between art and technology.

The video focuses simply on Knowles dancing in a variety of lamé outfits in the abandoned mall. With its arcade consoles and pawn shops, it could be frozen in 1986, Solange’s birth year. Echoing the synth- and piano-backed hook, “Played around with your heart / now I’m playing around in the dark,” the setting around intermittently goes dark, brightening again to reveal joyful details like balloons, confetti, and light-up shoelaces. One of the best moments takes place amid a wall of rims, when a seeming bystander nonchalantly joins in dancing with the singer at 2:25.

Solange has truly hit her stride in this video, markedly differentiating herself from sister Bey through her own infectious brand of understated cool. She’s the indie one, and we’re ok with that.

True, a collaboration between Solange and musician Dev Hynes produced by Terrible Records, can be purchased here.
