Watch: Truman Flyer “True Love”

Truman Flyer has released the music video for her debut single, “True Love.”

Love | True love | New love,” croons Truman, barefoot and spinning under a rainbow parachute in the park. In the new music video for “True Love,” the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and the rest of the Frequent Flyer troupe ride on a merry-go-round and frolick in the grass on a sunny day, all scored by the easy sway of the song’s dreamy guitars, ethereal synths, and Truman’s feathery voice. But the song isn’t just about escaping into bliss, as the lyrics betray a darker motivation behind the song’s call to love. “Cause the world can be cold and so unkind | Marking, marring mirrors in your mind | Nothing gets you off | And you’re craving,” remarks Truman as she walks curiously through Times Square, commenting on the perplexities of the modern world like a gen-z Alice in Wonderland. The song is about making connections in an age of atomization, going with the flow in times of turbulence, and letting go and letting love.

It’s the push and pull between these themes that the music video represents so vividly. In one scene, Truman holds up two recording iPhones in front of the camera, as if offering up a set of new digital eyes to the audience, asking them to see through her lens, to empathize. “Love | True love | New love | True love | Love,” repeats Truman hypnotically as a hyper-saturated background of billboards and skyscrapers spins dazzlingly behind her. “True Love” is about more than touching grass; it’s about reconnecting with the world, opening up, and asking it to love you back.

You can watch the video below or on Truman Flyer’s YouTube, and the song is available now on streaming and Bandcamp.
