Listen: Laulu “Innate”

A powerhouse from the north, Laulu’s “Innate” is the defining track off their debut EP. The Minnesota natives pack an ambient layered punch, with beating tribal drums and sorrowful folk guitar fingerpicking. The track is eerie, a pre-war anthem that evokes a cocktail of anger and sadness from unpleasant memories and relationship letdowns, and the thing that leaps out most about this track is the vocalist’s she-wolf howls, which are full of so much emotion it’s almost impossible not to feel something. It’s even more powerful seeing it live (as I got to sit in on a practice with them this past weekend in a Minneapolis basement). And though we only get a glint of it in this track, the male lead’s vocals are just as unique, with harsh cries that yearn and regret. The entire EP is fantastic, but this song is a treat in itself.
