Listen: Waxahatchee “Air”

Waxahatchee is the Philadelphia based project, and creative outlet, for singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. “Air,” the first single off her upcoming album, Ivy Trip, has the attitude of early ’90s alt rock mixed with ’80s synth breakdowns. The track is relaxed and melancholic, and takes me back to autumn, to the times I used to hide in the forests behind my grandmother’s house, playing alone among the dead leaves and chirping birds. The line “I left you out like a carton of milk” has a strong sense of conflict, with equal measures of confidence and regret. The lyrics revolve around a break-up and how two people go about interacting with each other in the aftermath, and the wispy music reflects the bitter sweetness of nostalgia, in a way most other bands are only reaching for. If the album is anything like “Air,” Ivy Trip  could be a great record to help kick off a new year of music.
