Mon. 7/6
- Rough Trade Below: Show Me the Body
- NYC based post-hardcore group Show Me the Body is playing their new album Alone Together, releasing July 10th, at Rough Trade Below. Hit this show to hear the band’s new LP live because the next chance you’ll get to see Show Me the Body play is October 15th at Webster Hall.
- The Gutter: From Brooklyn With Love, Venezuela Earthquake Relief Benefit Show
- Support local artists and a great cause. All money raised will be donated to support earthquake relief efforts in Venezuela.
Tues. 7/7
- Elsewhere: Florry, Sweet Baby Jesus
- Summer always needs a little twang. Get your fix of alt country Tuesday night at Elsewhere. Florry’s latest album Sounds Like… was conceived in sunshine, its free-spirited rays shining out in every direction.
- Music Hall of Williamsburg: American Football, fantasy of a broken heart
- I really hope American Football plays every song off American Football at this show. The pioneers of midwest emo deserve to give the crowd just this. Crying to “Stay Home” live will be spiritual, I’ve done it enough times in my bedroom already.
- Nightclub 101: Foxes In Fiction, Nicholas Nicholas, PAYW4LL
- Foxes in Fiction, the project of Warren Hildebrand, has not released any music since 2019. Because of that, Hildebrand’s dreamy, sound collages hold a quintessential 2010s sound to them: effervescent, floating, and free.
Weds. 7/8
- Central Park SummerStage: Spoon, Ratboys, Bodega, Alisa Ali
- What’s better than some sunshine and a free Spoon show? After the Central Park set, Britt Daniel of Spoon is DJing at Nightclub 101. Online RSVP is full, so show up early to get in.
- Mercury Lounge: Jejune, Shyness Clinic
- It’s Jejune’s first time touring in twenty-five years. Thanks to the Numero Group reissues, the second wave emo band is one of my favorites from the 90s. I think about “Regrets are Unanswered Dreams” way too often. If you can’t make this show, they’re also playing Mercury Lounge on Friday.
- Pier 11, Atlantic Basin: Guyscrapers, Plastic, Wesley Wolffe
- This July, TankerTunes is bringing a series of fundraising shows to raise money for PortSide aboard the Mary Whalen, a retired oil tanker. The first show on tap is all about rocking and rolling. Before the gig, give Guyscrapers’ album Why?scrapers a listen.
- Elsewhere: Vivian Girls
- Although the Vivian Girls broke up in 2014, the 2010s indie rock girl group is back on tour. Sweet and bubbly, the band’s track “Where Do You Go” will remain a tried and true classic.
- Union Pool: Jon Download, Andy Loebs, Torture Methods
- Union Pool is putting on an evening of electronic percussion music with a bill of artists testing the limits of sonic boundaries. Last week, Alt Citizen writer Lulú Rodriguez went on a “Coffee Date” with Grant Chapman, the man behind Torture Methods, to discuss his new self-titled EP. Give the interview a read before the gig.
Thurs. 7/9
- Nightclub 101: goodnight, Lucas, Alana Markel, Izzy Goldbow
- goodnight, Lucas is playing Nightclub 101 for the release of his new album requiem. goodnight, Lucas gets points for naming his album one of my favorite words; requiem meaning a song, poem, or act of remembrance. Only goodnight, Lucas knows who or what his music remembers.
- Sony Hall: Sun Kil Moon
- “Green green youth, what about the sweetness we knew?/What about what’s good, what’s true from those days?/ Can’t count all the lovers I’ve burned through/So why do I still burn for you?” Sun Kil Moon’s lyricism speaks for itself. Mark Kozelek writes from the deepest parts of his soul, unabashed and raw.
Fri. 7/10
- The Hancock: Victoryland, Fernette, Fashion
- Victoryland’s recent album My Heart Is A Room With No Cameras In It’s been getting buzz; all rightfully deserved. With an Animal Collective-esque flair, the experimental pop rock album is a testament to the lost art of the album.
- Pier 17: Poppy, Landmvrks, Thousand Below
- Poppy’s got lore. The once satirical, robotic YouTube personality turned metalcore Grammy nominee released her eleventh album Empty Hands in January. The LP is a demonstration that Poppy is a true pop artist, with an understanding of the nuances and contradictions of pop itself.
- 20 Meadow St: Fortress, Celebrity Wife Swap, Jules, Low Measure
- If you love Unwound, Lync, or Swirlies, you need to listen to Fortress’s EP Who Will Dress Our Soldiers. A post-hardcore renaissance is coming… watch out.
- Le Poisson Rogue: King Woman, Superfan
- Drone, shoegaze, and doom metal band King Woman is playing a series of shows for the fifth anniversary of Celestial Blues. Opening for the band is Superfan, one of my favorite artists at the moment. Nobody ever said that indie folk and doom metal can’t be on the same bill…
- ALPHAVILLE: Komodos, Veronica, Whaat
- Komodo’s alt rock is for fans of Been Stellar, Radio Free Alice, and Wunderhorse. Before the show, listen to the band’s new single “Angel of the Heatwave,” a grunged out, yearning, track.
Sat. 7/11
- Brooklyn Paramount: Jack White
- Jack White’s seventh solo album, Frozen Charlotte, releases July 10th. Named after the unjointed, porcelain Victorian-era dolls (featured on the album’s cover), Frozen Charlotte showcases the best of Jack White’s rock and roll sensibilities. If you can’t make the show Saturday, White is also playing Sunday night.
- The Sultan Room: Emperor X, Peaer, Zachshots, Christopher Emond
- Emperor X, the project of Chad Matheny, deserves more credit. The artist is prolific, with his latest indie-folk album Unified Field dropping last month. Playing alongside Matheny are some of Brooklyn’s best twee acts.
- Nightclub 101: La Sécurité, Yuvees
Sun. 7/12
- Union Pool: Angel Du$t, No Idols
- This week’s edition of Summer Thunder brings Angel Du$t to play a free gig. The Baltimore, MD based band lineup’s fluctuated over the years: once made up of members of Turnstile and Trapped Under Ice, Justice Tripp is now the band’s sole constant member. That hasn’t stopped Tripp though, the band’s latest album COLD 2 TOUCH came out last February.
