Mon. 8/24:
- Bowery Ballroom: Faetooth
- Self-described “fairy doom” band Faetooth creates metal oriented music with mystical and ethereal elements. Dark and enchanting, their music is intended for a forbidden forest…or Bowery Ballroom.
Tues. 8/25:
- TV EYE: The Paranoyds, 95 Bulls, Firstsex
- The wait is over. The Paranoyds’ latest EP Late Nighter is out, the band’s first release since Talk Talk Talk in 2022. Collaborators Laila Hashemi and Lexi Funston met each other in preschool and their SoCal, K Records inspired garage rock sound is a result of decades of friendship. As a believer that growing up with somebody creates some sort of psychic, songwriting ability, The Paranoyds are the living proof.
Weds. 8/26:
- Elsewhere: Nuovo Testamento, Lathe of Heaven
- Whenever I’m in LA Apparel they’re always playing some sort of austere, euro dance music that makes me buy something skimpy. Nuovo Testamento’s dark Italo-disco and synth-drenched pop needs to be on their playlist. The group makes seriously sexy music.
- Nightclub 101: Billboard Style, Or Best Offer, face of ancient gallery
- Alt Citizen loves Good English Records! The New York and Nashville based independent label is bringing the best to Nightclub 101’s “MUSIC!” series. We’ve interviewed two artists on this bill, Billboard Style and face of ancient gallery, whose genres may differ, but are equally talented. This bill is going to rock.
Thurs. 8/27:
- Lucinda’s: Dinosaur Jr., Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog
- Dinosaur Jr. is doing the unthinkable. From Thursday to Saturday, the band is playing free shows at small venues across the city. Join the waitlist for tickets here (I am not sure if tickets have been released yet, let me know if you were able to get one).
- Elsewhere: Water From Your Eyes (Rachel Brown) DJ Set, DJ Practice
- Rachel Brown is on their DJ arc. On top of being part of Water From Your Eyes and releasing music under their solo project thanks for coming, Brown is now a DJ. They’ve only played a few sets this summer, and this time around they’re playing the Elsewhere rooftop.
- Earth (49 Orchard St): Anastasia Coope, Lola Simon, Fiona Jacobson-Yang
- Musician Anastasia Coope is giving the people what they want. Thursday night, Coope is bringing the Coney Island Mermaid Parade to Lower Manhattan. The evening entails music and video, Under the Sea Sweets by Lola Simon and Fiona Jacobson-Yang, and a mermaid costume pageant.
- untitled rooftop: Zack Villere, DORIS
- Baby’s Presents brings former soundcloud superstar turned rising indie artist Zack Villere to the untitled rooftop. Villere recently released “On Your Way Home” with Rockie Rode, a laidback, acoustic lullaby that captures an existential sense of longing. Here is hoping that Rockie Rode makes an appearance at this gig.
Fri. 8/28:
- Skinny Dennis: Dinosaur Jr., Steve Gunn
- Another day, another free Dinosaur Jr. show. This Friday, Skinny Dennis is trading their usual country music for some real rock. I’m pretty sure J Mascis is going to blow out Skinny Dennis’s sound system and I want to be there to see it.
- Baby’s All Right: ideasforconversations, olswel, Swords2
- It’s the final night of silknode’s residency at Baby’s All Right before the app’s launch. This rendition of the show is going to get glitchy: ideasforconversations‘s analog dance music, olswel’s hyperpop, and Swords2’s digitized collage of emo rap are all in store.
- 55-57 N 9th St: Meat Computer, Dallas Cowboys, Egoseed, Ear Training, Reverie
- Meat Computer’s new single “nervous distortion” is going to hit at 3rd Space’s warehouse show. Insane lineup, sick venue, and look at that… it’s time to dance.
- Pageant: Porches (solo), Threshold, Jake Lazovick and Dimitri Giannopoulos
- Pageant, an artist-run performance space, is partially founded by voyeur’s Sharleen Chidiac. With Chidiac’s top notch taste in mind, Pageant is putting on an unplugged, melancholic set featuring Threshold’s wandering guitar music followed by a solo Porches performance. This bill offers the chance to be introspective in a room filled with others. Will you choose to?
- DM for Address: Holidays in United States (acoustic), Glen Vine, Finger Puppets
- Post the release of their new single “Girl Problems,” Holidays in United States is playing an acoustic set at an undisclosed location. The midwest emo band’s second album How to Count to Five comes out October 2nd, and this show might be your chance to hear some unreleased material. And trust me, the new stuff rocks.
- The Hancock: Slow Pulp
- Slow Pulp is playing an acoustic preview of their upcoming album Melodie, releasing September 18th, at the Hancock. Imagine “Better Man” stripped down, vocalist Emily Massey’s lyricism on full display, and the raw sound of a guitar without effects. It will be magical.
Sat. 8/29:
- Maria Hernandez Park: Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore Group, They Are Gutting A Body of Water
- This show is a dream come true. I live a few blocks from Maria Hernandez and cannot fathom that Dinosaur Jr., Thurston Moore, and TAGABOW will be playing in the park. Hit the deli for a tall boy, wear some beater sneakers, and see if these bands play into, or dissipate the chaotic personality of the park.
- Baby’s All Right: Dinosaur Jr., Mike Kinsella (of American Football), Snail Mail (solo)
- Dinosaur Jr. double header. See them during the day, see them at night. For the night show at Baby’s, Mike Kinsella of American Football is on the bill, as well as a solo Snail Mail performance.
- Music Hall of Williamsburg: Swervedriver, Slow Fiction, The Still Out (Brooklyn Vegan presents)
- Head out to Music Hall of Williamsburg to support independent music journalism because BrooklynVegan (who just got hit with mass layoffs) is presenting a night of real, alternative rock. 90s English rock band Swervedriver is on the bill, and though they formed in 1989, the band just released their new single “Flawed.”
- Postcard Brewing (111-30 Beach Channel Drive): Avishag, Cohen Rodrigues, Seraphine’s Cleaver, Shearing
- I’ve never been to Postcard Brewing, but I’d go to see Shearing. The band’s EP Broadway Looks so Medieval sounds like the Brian Jonestown Massacre; it’s the type of unguarded, droning rock music I can walk directionless miles to.
- Trans Pecos: T!LT, Break Right, The Wisconaut
- You heard it here first. T!LT, Break Right, and The Wisconaut are playing a five dollar show at Trans Pecos with an open bar. It’s cash only, so grab a five and get ready to rage.
Sun. 8/30:
- Nightclub 101: Jordan Patterson, Lea Jaffe, Fernette
- My words are insufficient in describing the unique quality of Jordan Patterson’s voice. Entirely her own, Patterson’s voice is warm and dripping with smooth vibrato. It holds a likeness to Fiona Apple. Before the show, be sure to give Patterson’s new single “Just My Friend” a listen.
