A few of my favorite things: Carwash

I will never, NEVER be sick of emo music. Not side bangs, skinny jeans, eyeliner emo, but Elliot Smith, Bright Eyes, the world is grey and I feel everything and nothing kind of emo. And in that way, Carwash is perfect. Toeing the line of melodrama without crossing over into the extreme, the listener is able to experience a full and varied array of emotions on Carwash’s (aka Garrett Seamans) debut EP soap water.

This EP came about the way much great current music did — during quarantine. Never intending the songs to be released, after revisiting the demos and finding cohesion musically and thematically between the tracks, Seamans was compelled to bring Carwash to live and bring soap water out of the ether and into the material (digital) world.

The release is inherently nostalgic as it reminisces on friendships and relationships Seamans thought about most while isolated. Each track feels like it could be your own diary entry. On his list of influences for Carwash, Seamans lists “the need for a language more accessible than words themselves”. In building the world of this EP, I would say Seamans is on his way to figuring out what that language is.

To get to know him a little better, he shared a few of his favorite things with us as well as some of his own photographs below.

1. Burritos – specifically my hometown Mexican spot, Roberto’s

2. A Whole Fucking Lifetime of This by American Pleasure Club (listen on bandcamp to hear the whole thing)

3. The ocean (this is a photo i took at my local break in San Diego)

4. Skateboarding (a photo my friend Michael took of me doing a boneless)

5. Baskin Robbins Oreo Milkshake

6. The room called the “playroom” at the home I grew up at in San Diego (this is the view out the window, nothing too crazy, but holds a special place for me)

7. Honey Bunches of Oats

8. My NZ friends (this photo is missing some people, but also adds in a couple other lovely friends from a rendezvous in NYC)

soap water is out now. Keep up with Garrett Seamans/Carwash on InstagramFacebook, and YouTube
