A few of my favorite things: Rebounder

Giving us a heavy dose of nostalgia for what New York nights used to be like, Rebounder is back with his latest music video “Night Sports”. Shot by “everyone in New York” the video is a history of clips celebrating going out and all the fun shit we used to do. Clips of pool tables, tattoos being given, concerts, bars, and more, appropriately travel through a subway tunnel. The visual is perfectly matched with Rebounder’s version of rock — one that feels slightly nostalgic on its own. Like, if Rebounder was around during Gossip Girl, please tell me how there wouldn’t have been a multi-track inclusion on the show. He also is currently featured on the Spotify “my life is a movie” editorial playlist so if you were in need of some cinematic music to pair with your commute, here you go.

Since we can’t party and celebrate “Night Sports” (one of our favorite things) in the fashion it should be, we decided to ask Rebounder to share a few of his favorite things with us. Enjoy.

1)Nancy Sinatra

One of my all time favorite artists, usually the first song of the day I’LL listen to is by her. She had this run from 1966 – 1968 where she made 4 great records, and a great collaboration album with Lee Hazelwood, which yielded the song ‘Summer Wine”. That song has been covered by all of your favorite acts.

She was also fantastic in ‘The Wild Angels’, and made a great record in 2004 with a great cover of Morrissey’s “Let Me Kiss You”.
After years of dreaming about a collaboration with her I reached out to her people earlier this year, she is sadly retired. Records still hit though.

2)The ‘98 – 99’s Knicks

Though I wasn’t that present during it, I loved the lineup of this team, and watched a lot of clips of them over the years. The band and I always do huddles pre shows, and then take pictures of whoever is in the backstage area, we call it ‘the starting lineup.’ That’s a reference to the 98 starting lineup video, which is classic. It was changing of the guard year, that rare crossover between old and new, Sprewell and Ewing at the same time.  We have a framed picture of Patrick Ewing hitting the fadeaway jumper over a young Shaq in the studio, though I’m pretty sure that picture is from 96. Rebounder the name

3)Decaf Ice Coffee

I’m a big ice coffee drinker, I think from an early age I was hitting the bodega to cop it. These days I tend to opt for decaf if it’s available, cause you can drink more of it and you don’t get the shakes. It’s a balancing act, you don’t want to order decaf in a place that doesn’t carry it, but if you have **excellent city situational awareness* this shouldn’t be an issue for you. Wake up, skate to the nearest semi nice bodega whilst listening to Nancy Sinatra, hit the decaf ice coffee and start your day.

4) Revel

Revel is really the only way to get around Brooklyn during corona. I built my studio in Greenpoint when I was living in Bushwick and didn’t wanna have to transfer trains. I’ve been putting on for revel since jump street. It’s great. To be clear I live in Manhattan but revel is everywhere now baby. Fine people of Revel, my bank routing number is

5) My friend Brynn Wallner and her twitter account

My friend Brynn has a really funny twitter account, she speaks from the heart about bullshitting in the city, the band phoenix, what else is there really?  Seems as though she has really found her voice speaking about hot girls, and it’s always good to speak with authority on the topic.  She hits the woah in the video for “Night Sports” on the beat, really worth a viewing for that alone.

6)Hardware stores, all of them

Most stores are terrible, but hardware stores are great. They have everything you need all the time. Feel as though I’m forever buying more hanging wire.

If you were to wear items of clothing only bought at hardware stores, you’d look like a member of Big Audio Dynamite, and that’s a look that should come back.
Also Big Audio Dynamite would’ve become Gorillaz if the technology was there, but they were pre ableton. I think both Mick Jones and Damon Albarn would agree to this.
Mick Jones and Paul Simonon were touring members of Gorillaz’ third album Plastic Beach, which feels appropriate. I love when worlds fully connect.

7)HBO’s short lived show “How to Make it in America”

I remember watching this when it aired…I was in 9th grade and went to high school downtown. It’s objectively a bad show, but the music was so good,  the shots of the city so fun, it kind of felt a lot like my 9th grade experience. It did accurately showcase one of the coolest parts of growing up in New York, which is waking up in one place with one group and hours later being in a totally different situation with different heads from a different culture. I also love the show’s focus on events. I miss events so freaking much.

You can watch it in a weekend. Again, a mild recommendation. Think the only other show I’ve watched during quarantine is Peaky Blinders…watched so much of it so late at night I just fully went on La time for a week.

8) Playing Tennis with my tennis team, The Velseka All Stars

An excuse to wear great shorts and no shirts with my fashion adjacent friends, the veselka all stars is an ever changing collective of people with access to a tennis racket. That’s really the only defining characteristic of the team. This summer there were no basketball nets, its been cool to play tennis at the various parks that are totally empty, mainly the one in the East River Park.

If you want, get the flick of some friends and I dousing each other in seltzer after yet another victory.

9)Bob Dylan’s Rough and Rowdy Ways

I think one of the best records of 2020 was made by a 79 year old man, which doesn’t often happen. The song ‘I contain Multitudes’ is beautiful, ‘False Prophet’ feels like it was written from the point of view of Tommy Shelbey or some Peaky Blinders gang leader. I love how he uses imagery. Shortly after this record was released I was walking through my apartment building hallway to my spot and heard it through the doorway of a neighbor. I feel like that’s how he wants us to hear this record.

I think I’ll be returning to it for some time, like any great record, you notice a new thing each time you listen to it.
I noticed movie posters for the record went up for the record on Lafeyette and Houston, they had this look from a 40’s noir film. I was able to grab one, get it cleaned and framed, and now it’s in the apartment. I need to stop framing posters, I think that’s why I’m hitting the hardware store so much this summer.

10) Time Crisis

I’m not a big podcast listener, but this is a very ethical and funny internet radio show. It’s hosted by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and American painter Jake Longstreth, they go deep on music, both relevant and of the moment, and completely forgotten influential gems. They mentioned Joe Meek in passing, and that sent me down the rabbit hole of his work. They also take apart corporate food ads and show just how absurd some of the accepted norms are. It’s really funny, it’s an Apple Music exclusive, but there is this high schooler who rips the episode to a Tumblr (long live), some friends and I have a text thread for when the kid updates the Tumblr, then we all tap in and laugh our assess off. I recommend starting with the episode ‘Dystopian Diet Coke’.
