Last January, I uploaded an Instagram video of the snow falling outside my Washington Heights window to Frank Ocean’s, new single, “Chanel.” The whimsical R&B release seemed to fit the stillness of the morning perfectly. As NYC was hit with more snow this week, Belle Game’s latest track, “Only One” swiftly trumped Mr. Ocean’s for this years existential winter song. The Vancouver based electro-pop groups latest single is a B-side track from their second album, Fear/Nothing.
“Only One” blends the dreamy voice of Andrea Lo with foggy amplified beats dragging us into a disarray of emotions. The chorus is almost haunting as the song seems to increase in volume and scale, “Why can’t you say you love me now / why can’t you say you want me now / why can’t you say you need me now?” In “Only One” Belle Game masterfully turns indie-pop on its head with distressed lyrics over danceable noise. It’s also a great kickoff track to your next bomb cyclone playlist.
Belle Game will be at Elsewhere on January 24th, tickets and details here.
