Watch: Blood Orange “Chamakay”

Blood Orange, the most recent incarnation of multi-instrumentalist and collaborator extraordinaire Dev Hynes, released a music video for “Chamakay,” the first single of his upcoming sophomore album Cupid Deluxe.

Directed by Adam Bainbridge of Kindness, the video follows Hynes on his first ever visit to his mother’s hometown in Guyana and his subsequent tracking down of family members, including a 92 year old grandfather he’d never met previously. The track itself is 80’s nostalgia, steady and smooth, with marimba and steel drum providing just enough ghostly accompaniment for the combined vocals of Hynes and Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek to really pop. It’s the perfect complement to the vibrant locale, and Hynes makes sure to capitalize on the collective vibe by gracing the streets and beaches with his fluid, Michael Jackson inspired dance moves. Kudos on all of that, especially the sleek little sax solo that flourishes in the outro.

Purchase the single here, and be on the lookout for Cupid Deluxe sometime later in 2013 from Domino Recording Company.
