Interview with PIX

Hannah Rodgers, aka PIX, first caught our attention with her most recent single “A Way to Say Goodbye,” a low-key track that blurs the lines between electronic, psychedelic, and folk. Strategically somber and sparse, PIX’s music creates a platform for her to showcase her strong, wispy vocals, which she capitalizes on by interweaving dreamy layers of melody. This South Londoner manages to create atmospheres of sound using as few elements as possible, which is to say she’s got chops beyond her years, and while there’s no full-length album out as of yet, we know there is vast potential here just waiting to unfold.

As a newcomer to the scene, we reached out to PIX in order to get some insider information on her back story. Check out our quick interview with the talented singer and see what she’s about, from writing songs about cats to dissecting Dark Side of the Moon.

How long have you been making music?

I started writing songs when I was about nine, bearing in mind I couldn’t play the guitar then I had to settle for acapella… I mostly wrote the songs about my cats or friendship fall outs…Deep stuff…

What was the concept behind your video “A Way To Say Goodbye”?

It represents being in two minds about something, recognising in better minds that we can sometimes believe what we want to believe and lead ourselves astray. But the second of the two Hannah’s is working in reverse much like one’s mind can do when it clings to the past, trying to distract her in a mischievous way.

In your video you burn Anne Edwards’ ‘Lady Behave.’ What other books would you like to burn?

I only burnt one page... I love books too much to burn ’em!

How would you describe your sound / vibe?

I don’t think I would!

Who are some of your favorite musicians? What are you listening to these days?

I’ll always listen to Joni MitchellCocteau Twins never fail to engage me.

Broadcast are great, I only recently discovered their music through speaking to Dave from Glass Animals who heard some similarities between us, since then I have been fairly obsessed… And gotta love a bit of Mac Demarco! There’s singers such as Anne Briggs who’s style of singing I believe has probably really influenced some parts of my style. Her voice is incredible. Artists such as Donovan, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Pink Floyd are those who I grew up hearing on long car journeys, waking up to in the morning. Something I’m eternally grateful to my family for.Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada, Outkast, Air, Fever Ray, Grizzly Bear, Lovin’ Spoonful, Nick Drake….Just too many beautiful musicians…It would take me forever to feel satisfied with the answer of this question!

What movies and albums resonate with you?

Movies, well, Watership Down has always stuck with me, I think it spreads such an important message in such a beautiful way. I feel a similar way about a new-ish film called Beasts Of The Southern Wild. The Green Mile is one of the most heart breaking films I’ve ever seen, but also extraordinary.

Joni Mitchell’s album Blue is one I’ve been listening to from a young age. It is a strong and heartfelt album I feel I can connect to. Lyrically outstanding. Pink Floyd The Dark Side Of The Moon is an album I’ve been taught a lot about by my Dad, and after many years of not quite feeling I understood it, I think I finally do.

What can we expect from you in the next couple of months?

I’m working on an EP. Early next year!!!
